Expressive Autumn Scenes

Expressive Autumn Scenes was a four week course which ended in late November.  The aim of the course was to explore using different painting techniques to create expressive, intuitive and atmospheric paintings.  Firstly we looked at visual impact such as using high tone and low tone colours.  We then looked at ways of making gestural marks, brushwork and using painting knives.  Below you can see examples of these techniques:

Below is the student's work which encompasses all the aspects of the course, i.e. being expressive, intuitive and atmospheric.

Seascapes and Lighthouses Art Course - October 2018

Original gouache painting by Jean 2018
I have just completed a four week art course on painting Seascapes and Lighthouses.  We started by looking at and discussing famous lighthouse paintings ranging from Carl Blechen to Edward Hopper.

We then talked about creating a sense of scale and how to go about doing so within the composition.  This can be achieved in a few ways - the best way is the most obvious which is to either put a figure or house, perhaps a boat into the composition to show how tall and wide some lighthouses are.  As well as looking at scale we looked a reflections on the water surface and also in mixing up general sky and sea colours.

It was a very successful course and the results of the course can be seen below:

Original Watercolour Painting and Colour Mixes by Sue

Welcome to the new academic year and a new course of Cliffs, Sand and Sea.  As you know my classes are open to beginners and more experienced artists.  On this course I was delighted to have two new beginners.

As usual we started off by looking at examples by famous artists.  We discussed techniques, colour mixes and looked at various sand and cliff samples collected from Isle of Wight beaches.  Over the course of the four weeks the students produced a wide range of paintings using various mediums such as oil, watercolour and acrylic.

The wonderful paintings created by the class are seen below including my own:
