Painting Lighthouses - May 2018

Original Oil Painting by Liz 2018
I have just completed a four week art course on Painting Lighthouses.  We started by looking at and discussing famous lighthouse paintings ranging from Carl Blechen to Edward Hopper.

We then talked about creating a sense of scale and how to go about doing so within the composition.  This can be achieved in a few ways - the best way is the most obvious which is to either put a figure, house or tree into the composition to show how tall and wide many lighthouses are.  As well as looking at scale we looked a reflections on the water surface and also in mixing up general sky and sea colours.

It was a very successful course which I will be running again in September in Bembridge. The results of the course can be seen below:

Painting Mountains and Valleys - February 2018

Kate working on her original oil painting
I have just completed teaching the course 'Painting Mountains and Valleys' at Northwood WI Hall.  The twelve students and I studied and discussed different artists' work in the past on the subject.  As there were a few new students I decided to do a recap of composition skills, atmospheric perspective as well as defined and soft edges.  We then spent a good proportion of time looking at how to paint snow including creating warm and cool snow mixes.  This gave every student a good base to create their own mountain or valley painting.

Their beautiful paintings are shown here and I am proud that each student's painting portrays their own individual style - including 1930s poster art to Expressionist art.

Painting Evening and Night Skies

Original oil painting by Jean 2017
I have just finished teaching a four week course on painting evening and night skies.  The class was packed and the atmosphere was both boisterous at times and also silent with avid concentration at other times.

Firstly we looked at colour mixes for night skies with each student mixing up their own variations and then we moved onto to warmer and brighter evening sky mixes.  For the actual paintings themselves the students used their own photographs which I always recommend as you invest more into the subject matter.

As always there was a mix of beginners and intermediates. The painting above is Jean's fifth painting and her very first painting in oils.  I am sure you will agree that it is a fantastic painting as are the rest of the group's wonderful work.  Please take a moment to look at their wonderful paintings below:
